Restrictions on the Use of Social Security Numbers

Recognizing the threat of identity theft presented by the prominent display of Social Security numbers, the federal government has taken a number of steps to reduce their use. The IRS no longer puts Social Security numbers on the pre-printed labels sent to taxpayers. The Social Security Administration itself has ceased using Social Security numbers in written communications wherever possible while the Treasury Department, as of January 2004, no longer includes Social Security numbers on Social Security checks.
