Chapter 14. STEVE'S RULES > Credit Counseling Rules

Credit Counseling Rules

  1. If you need credit counseling, only consider credit counseling agencies that are affiliated with either the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies.

  2. Check out the particular company with the consumer protection division of your state attorney general's office and the Federal Trade Commission.

  3. Go to their offices. Do not pick a company entirely through the Internet or by phone.

  4. Make sure that they offer serious debt counseling and not just debt management plans.

  5. Check out the costs. Make sure you know what all the fees are. If you are in particularly dire financial straits, ask if they will waive their fees.

  6. Confirm that they do not share any of your personal information without your approval.

  7. Make sure that the agency's employees are not on commission for enrolling you in a debt management plan.

  8. Never participate in file segregation as a way of fixing your credit report.
