Taxes and Identity Theft

Taxes and identity theft seem like a match made in hell. Taxes are bad enough, but piling on identity theft compounds the misery. Whether it is being victimized by a tax preparing identity thief or falling prey to an identity theft scam that uses phony forms to lure you into providing your Social Security number and other sensitive information, the result is the same—trouble.

Tax Preparation and Identity Theft

Preparing your income tax return can be taxing enough. Becoming a victim of identity theft in the process seems like cruel and unusual punishment. Many people go to commercial tax preparers who often set up in large rooms in malls or sections of larger stores. At times, the privacy and security of your information is not as protected as it should be. Identity thieves lurking in these places can see documents and information on computer screens. The solution is to always be conscious of maintaining the privacy of your documents and information. Of course, this applies when you are discarding any documents that you might have used to prepare your tax returns. Your trash may be treasure to an identity thief. Thoroughly shred any financial worksheets or documents used to help prepare your income taxes when discarding them.
