Chapter 8. CREDIT CARDS > Trivia That Can Win You a Bar Bet

Trivia That Can Win You a Bar Bet

Have you ever wondered what the numbers on your credit card mean? Neither have I, which is why if you are ever looking to win some easy money in a bar bet, you might tell someone that you can guess the first digit on their MasterCard credit card. The answer is 5. The answer is always 5, just as the answer is always 4 for Visa, 6 for Discover, and 3 for American Express. As a matter of fact, the second digit on an American Express card is always 7. On a MasterCard and Visa, the remaining numbers signify the bank number and the account number.

Tip

Always sign yourcard as soon as you get it. Although many clerks do not even bother to check your signature when you make a purchase, it still is a good way to keep your card secure.

Do not give your credit card number over the telephone to anyone unless you have placed the call and you are sure to whom you are speaking.

Don't forget to get your card back when you make a purchase. A good way to remember to do this is to keep your wallet or credit card holder out until your credit card is returned. And then immediately put it back into your wallet.

Maintain a list of all of your credit card numbers and the toll free numbers to call if your card is lost orstolen.
