Premiums

Medicare A is financed through Social Security taxes paid by workers and their employers. If you have worked for at least 10 years in Medicare-covered employment, you do not need to pay a monthly premium for Medicare A coverage. People who worked less than 7½ years in Medicare-covered employment may receive Medicare A coverage by paying a premium of $316 per month in 2003. Workers with 7½ years of Medicare-covered employment can receive Medicare A coverage by paying a premium of $174 per month in 2003. Medicare B monthly premiums are $58.70 for 2003. This amount is adjusted annually, so for the most up-to-date figures, go to www.medicare.gov.

Medicare C premiums vary greatly depending on the particular plan.
