Overview

Medicaid is a joint state and federal program that provides payment of the costs of long-term nursing home care. Among the states there are considerable differences in how Medicaid operates. A few states, such as Hawaii, Oregon and Wisconsin, have commendably taken the lead in providing significant benefits for home health care. In the great majority of the states, if you might be able to stay in your home with home health care provided at a cost that would generally be less than the cost of institutionalization, you could still find yourself having to go to a nursing home because sufficient funds are unavailable through Medicaid to pay for the cost of receiving health care in your own home.
