Work Situation: “ <Customer’s name>, we value your business a lot and want to give you the best price we can. I can authorize an additional discount of 5%, and I will have accounts receivable make that discount retroactive to your last order as well as apply it to your future orders.”

Home Situation: “ <Significant other’s name>, I do like what you bought. I’m surprised and disappointed that you bought it without giving me the opportunity to participate in the decision. I would like for us to work out an agreement about future purchases for anything that costs more than a couple of hundred dollars. Does that sound reasonable?”
