Part III: Feelings: The Emotional Part o... > Choice and Win-Win Relationships

Chapter 9. Choice and Win-Win Relationships

Assertiveness is a win-win approach and philosophy. To build and maintain win-win relationships, each person must accept responsibility for his or her own feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. You cannot be solely responsible for the feelings of others because you do not “make them feel.” You are responsible for what you say and do because your words and actions invite others to feel certain emotions. Whether they do or not is up to them!

Assertiveness requires us to accept responsibility for our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; and requires us to respect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of others. When an individual accepts these responsibilities and stops blaming others for his or her feelings, a giant step has been taken toward a win-win philosophy.
