Chapter 4. Who will make the Best Counselor?

Byron and Ginger are new supervisors for a large service organization. On Friday both will attend a company-sponsored seminar designed to teach effective counseling skills to deal with problem employees and enhance productivity.

Byron views the day as an opportunity to contribute; Ginger has some misgivings. Byron has already demonstrated good management skills. He is excellent at delegating, setting priorities, making decisions and communicating—especially in group situations. Byron is a high-tempo supervisor who knows how to build strong relationships with superiors. It is also obvious that Byron cares for people, especially his own employees. In his younger days, he spent several summers as a camp counselor. Although a business administration major at the university, his early interest in people caused him to minor in psychology.
