Chapter 21. Explaining What Lies Ahead (Rules of the Game)

Sometimes, before moving into a counseling session, it may be smart on your part to explain to the counselee the process you will be going through together. Field testing indicates that using the baseball analogy to do this can be most helpful. In other words, show and tell the counselee that both of you will go around the bases step by step and when home plate is reached, the session or sessions will be over. This may relieve some of the apprehension within the counselee about what will happen and enhance the process at the same time. It will also communicate that you are present to guide the individual around the bases. He or she is the player. Not you.

Here is one way you might explain each of the four bases to be covered.
