Chapter 12. Relaxation > Respond to Your Body’s Messages

Respond to Your Body’s Messages

When you feel tense…

  1. Pay attention to your lower legs. Get off your feet and raise them to a resting position on a stool or chair. Relax the calves and release the tightness.

  2. Next, focus on your back and spine. Get up and then release the tension by slowly breathing in and out. Relax and let go of the tension.

  3. Practice breathing slowly. Feel your diaphragm and stomach contract. Do this until you feel relaxed.

  4. You know how a tense neck feels. Roll your head slowly and shrug your shoulders afterward. Become aware of any tension and relax.

  5. If your tension is strong, you may have a headache. Rest, close your eyes and think of pleasant, relaxing places.

  6. Learn to focus on your muscles and practice relaxing them.

  7. Go to a quiet place and meditate.
