Chapter 10. Anger and Your Communication... > Use Paraphrasing to Help Eliminate A...

Use Paraphrasing to Help Eliminate Anger Situations

Communication is often involved in anger situations because we do not check to see whether or not we really understand what is being said. Even when the other person is expressing hurt feelings, we usually respond with “I see” or “I understand” when we really do not see or understand at all. Sometimes we are even thinking about what we will say next instead of accurately hearing the message sent.

One way to make sure you have accurately interpreted what is being communicated to you is to use the technique of paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is restating in your own words what you have heard someone else say. It is a way of revealing your understanding of the other person’s message and finding out whether the remark means the same to you as it does to him or her.
