Case Study

Case Number 17

Jess is forever taking seminars and reading self-help books in an effort to improve himself. Once finished, he vows he will improve in that area. The only problem is that within a few days, he is back into his old pattern and no permanent behavioral changes have been accomplished.

As his supervisor, you decide to give Jess a system that will help Jess to change his behavior so he can take advantage of what he learns. The system is a simple one. It recommends that having completed a seminar or self-help book, Jess write down from five to seven changes he would like to make. Never less than five or more than seven. Then, after three days, you go over Jess’s list with him, asking which changes are most important? After selecting the one that Jess is convinced will do the most for him, have him write a big red checkmark next to it.
