Case Number 10

Assume your name is Alice, and Kim Aoki, who was raised and educated in Japan, has become one of your best friends. You work closely together in corporate headquarters. Kim is excellent in computer programming, dealing with accounting systems, and her English is impeccable. But she is having trouble adjusting to the United States culture.

Kim is quiet, unassuming, and quickly moves to the background when her position is challenged by others. Last night the two of you were discussing the problem in an open but probing way. When you ask Kim why she finds it so difficult to stand up for herself, she replies: “It is the way I was raised. I feel uncomfortable when there are confrontations of any kind.” You reply: “How might I help you?” Kim says: “I just want to be more assertive, more like you.”
