Batch Files: Some Background

In Appendix B, I told you that the Command Prompt uses a program called cmd.exe to handle anything you type at the prompt. The Command Prompt has some commands—such as COPY, DIR, and DEL—built right in (these are called internal commands).

For most anything else, including your software applications and the external commands such as FORMAT, CHKDSK, and FC, Command Prompt calls a separate program. Command Prompt executes the command or program and returns to the prompt to await further orders.
