Log in under the user account for which you want to make your new alert sounds available. Open the User's Home folder (yours if you are currently logged in). Open the Library folder. Open the Sounds folder. Drag the alert sounds into the Sounds folder. This makes them available for the currently log- ged-in user to choose as the alert sound. Installing Alert Sounds for All Users You can also add alert sounds to the system so that they will be available to all the user accounts on your machine. However, to do this, you must log in under the root account. Logging in under the root account is beyond the scope of this book. However, information on creating and using a root account under Mac OS X is widely available (for an example, see my book Special Edition Using Mac OS X). Install an Alert Sound for All Users 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Log in under your Mac's root account. Open the Mac OS X startup volume. Open the System folder on the Mac OS X startup volume. Open the Library folder in the System folder (not the Library folder that is at the root of the Mac OS X startup volume). Open the Sounds folder.
