The Internet offers more information, connectivity, and fun services than just the World Wide Web. This section summarizes some of the most popular Internet services. Support for many of these services is built into Mac OS X, but it isn’t always clear how or where to access these services. Therefore, this section also provides suggestions for software you can use to access these services.

The World Wide Web

Using the World Wide Web from your computer system is pretty much a given— it’s the primary reason why many people own home computers. From its humble beginnings at CERN, a physics research institute in Switzerland, the Web has taken the Internet by storm. It’s almost hard to conceive of not using the Web to make purchases, do research, or simply view the home pages of friends and family.
