Using Preview

Earlier in this chapter, you learned how QuickTime Player could open any media file, not just an MOV file. You also learned that you can use QuickTime to open everyday image files, such as GIFs and JPEGs. But this would be sort of like using a sledgehammer to drive a thumbtack into a bulletin board; it would work, but it would be overkill.

Instead of using QuickTime player, Apple’s developers have applied the QuickTime API in a new, lighter way. The Preview application taps into the API to display compatible image files.
