Chapter 11. Making Network and Internet ... > Connecting to a Network Printer

Connecting to a Network Printer

Some printer manufacturers—notably Epson, Lexmark, and HP—are working with Apple to provide automatic printer networking for printers that can connect via Ethernet and communicate via TCP/IP. (Refer back to Chapter 10, “Working with Printers, Faxes, and Fonts,” for more on USB printers, which don’t support TCP/IP communication and thus must be connected directly to a computer rather than being used as a network printer.) Rendezvous therefore recognizes and sets up some of their newer models automatically. However, for older printers attached to your network, you’ll need to set the printer up manually using its IP address.

NOTE

Most networkable printers have an option or can generate a printout to determine what IP address the printer is using. Consult your printer’s documentation to learn how to find this information.
