Chapter 16. Jamming with iTunes 4 > Making Digital Files and Adding Them to You...

Making Digital Files and Adding Them to Your Library

If you want to build long playlists for your computer or to play music on portable devices, then you may want to convert your CD audio tracks to AAC or MP3 digital music files. When you use software like iTunes to convert a CD track to a digital file, the software eliminates certain file information that humans can’t hear. The resulting file is about 11 percent of the size of the original file (the MP3 file for a typical song is 3-4M) and sounds great to most listeners using typical equipment.

You can convert an individual CD track to a digital by importing the songs into your iTunes Library. To prepare for the process, choose iTunes, Preferences and then click on the Importing button. Choose the desired format for the digital song files and then click on OK.
