Shutting Down

While during the workday, it’s best to use sleep mode to preserve the system hardware, there may be circumstances where you want to turn your Mac off, such as when you’re leaving on vacation or want to protect the system during an electrical storm. (In the latter case, you also should unplug the system and all components, including disconnecting the modem from the phone jack.) When you want to turn off your Mac, you need to close any open applications and the OS and then power down the system. This ensures a safe shutdown that won’t in any way damage the system or software settings.

NOTE

If you encounter a system problem, you also can restart the system. See the section called “Restarting the System” in Chapter 21 to learn more.
