Chapter 22. Tackling Disk Issues

While the Mac OS X Version 10.3 software offers a great deal of stability, sometimes you may not be as lucky with the disk media that you use. The surface of both hard and removable disks consists of magnetic material that can be damaged. If dust somehow gets in the disk case, it can cause damage. If the read/write head in a drive malfunctions, it can cause damage. Other magnetic matter placed too close to the disk can also cause damage. In this chapter, you’ll learn how to:

Start and exit Disk Utility.

Check a disk for errors.

Repair a disk.

Erase a disk.
