Downloading Applications

Today, computer users can purchase software applications from a variety of sources. You can visit your local computer, electronics, or office supply store and typically find a nice selection of boxed software. Even major discount stores carry some software these days. You also can order your software from a number of catalogs or direct from a software company. You may receive software along with a new piece of equipment like a scanner and will need to install that software in order for the new hardware to work. Or, if you’ve set up the Internet connection for your Mac, you can go online to find and download software. Following are just a few resources to check out:

  • http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx. The Mac OS X Web downloads page includes links to a number of downloadable new programs and demo software that were written expressly for Mac OS X.

  • http://www.download.com and http://www.tucows.com. A number of sites also enable you to download shareware, freeware, and commercial software that you purchase by providing credit card information online. You can find downloads via Mac-specific sites like http://www.macaddict.com, or go to a general download page like http://www.tucows.com or http://www.download.com.

  • http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/index.shtml. Enables you to download a variety of freeware and shareware programs for Mac OS X, as well as offering links to Mac news and help topics.

  • Favorites, Where to Buy Macintosh Products or Favorites, Software Developers in Internet Explorer. Choosing this command enables you to jump directly to the Web sites for Macintosh product retailers and Mac software developers.
