Opening Another Finder Window

In Macintosh operating systems before the original Mac OS X release, each folder appeared in its own window. By contrast, Mac OS X enables you to navigate to a particular location within a single Finder window. As you make your way through various folders, the contents of the current Finder window simply change. This streamlined approach helps reduce clutter on the desktop, making it easier for you to select a particular window.

On the other hand, there will be instances where you need to see multiple Finder windows onscreen, such as when you want to move a file from one folder to another. The following steps show you two different methods for opening another Finder window:
