Repairing a Disk

If you verify a disk and find that it has problems or are advised by a technical support representative to repair a disk, then you can use Disk Utility to do so. However, Disk Utility does have a few limitations in this regard. It cannot

  • Repair a write-protected disk or CD-ROM.

  • Repair a disk that has files open in other applications. Close all open applications and files to eliminate this problem.

  • Repair the startup disk (boot disk or startup volume). To repair the startup disk, you have to use a third-party application such as Norton Disk Doctor (part of Norton Utilities 6.0) or boot from the Mac OS X CD-ROM and choose Installer, Open Disk Utility.
