Starting from a CD-ROM

You may encounter situations so severe that Mac OS X Version 10.2 won’t boot at all from a hard disk. Or you may have forgotten the password for the system. If you encounter such a problem, you may need to start the system from the Mac OS X CD-ROM. Follow these steps to do so:

  1. Insert the Install Disk 1 CD-ROM of the Mac OS X Version 10.2 software into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

  2. Use the method of your choice to restart the system, pressing and holding the C key down as soon as you can. (For example, if you use a keyboard combination to restart, press and hold the C key as soon as you release the key combination.)

  3. Once you hear the CD-ROM spinning, you can release the C key. The system will continue restarting and the Installer will reappear.

  4. At this point, you can take one of the following actions:

    • Click on the Continue button and rerun the Installer to reinstall Mac OS X Version 10.2, which should help any serious problems with the system. (During the installation process, you may click on the Options button after choosing the install disk. Choose Archive and Install to archive your network settings and perform a clean reinstall, or Erase and Install to completely blow away your old OS X installation. Note that you will lose documents when you choose a clean reinstall option, but that may be your only choice if the OS has been damaged extensively.) After the Installer sequence finishes, the system restarts automatically.

    • Open the Installer menu, then use the Reset Password or Open Disk Utility commands. Use Reset Password to create a new password, which is handy if you’ve forgotten the system password. Choose Open Disk Utility to verify (check) or repair the system’s boot hard disk. (Chapter 24, “Tackling Disk Issues,” covers how Disk Utility works.) Be sure to quit each utility when you finish with it. Then choose Quit Installer from the Installer menu and click on Restart in the resulting dialog box.
