Restarting the System

In the process of writing the original edition of this book, I spent many hours using the Public Beta version of Mac OS X. Even its test version worked reliably, with few, if any, instances where the system crashed. Nevertheless, all systems hang at some point or another. For example, you could install a piece of shareware that causes a problem or open a corrupt file that the system can’t handle.

NOTE

The terms “crash,” “hang,” and “freeze” are generally interchangeable. Each refers to an instance where the system has stopped responding partially or totally to your keyboard and mouse input.
