Chapter 10. Using the Automator to Make ... > Understanding the Automator

Understanding the Automator

The Automator enables you to automate actions that you repetitively perform on your Mac. You can create a series of steps the Automator will perform for you and then repeat those steps by running the program you create. Automator is extremely powerful because you can use it to automate actions involving many applications at the same time. Although Automator enables complex actions to be performed, its graphical interface makes building complex scripts as easy as drag-and-drop.

Understanding the Automator Application

When you open the Automator application, you'll see a three-paned window (see Figure 10.1). On the far left of the window is the list of applications on your Mac that Automator recognizes, which means you can automate actions involving those applications. When you select an application, the actions that can be automated will be shown in the center column. When you select an action or other object, an explanation of the object will be presented in the Information pane. The rightmost pane is the Workflow area, which is where you create your automation.
