Part 4. Setting System Preferences > Setting Options for Inserted Discs

Setting Options for Inserted Discs

Click the CDs & DVDs icon in the System Preferences window to display removable disc preferences.

Choose an option for blank CDs.

If you have a CD-burning program such as Toast, choose Open other application and navigate to the program in the Applications folder.

INTRODUCTION

Wouldn't it be nice if your Mac knew just what to do when you inserted a CD or DVD into its drive? The CDs & DVDs preferences enable you to have your Mac start up a specified program when you insert a blank disc that you're going to write yourself or when you insert a prewritten data, music, or movie disc.

HINT

Ignore Me, Please

Sometimes, the Ignore option is the best choice. If you set the Mac to ignore discs you insert, you'll be able to decide what to do with each disc at the time, without having to quit a program that started up when you didn't want it to. You might do this if you use multiple methods to burn CDs—for example, using Toast or the Finder, depending on the circumstances.

Choose an option for blank DVDs; if you use iDVD, choose Open; otherwise, choose Open other application.

Choose an option for music CDs; Open iTunes is the best choice unless you prefer a different program for playing music.

Choose an option for picture CDs; Open iPhoto is the best choice unless you prefer a different program for viewing photos.

Choose an option for video CDs; Open DVD Player is the best choice unless you prefer a different program for viewing movies.
