Part 13. Maintaining Your Mac > Installing the System Software

Installing the System Software

Insert the CD labeled Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and double-click Install Mac OS X.

Click Restart and enter an admin name and password. Then click OK. Your Mac reboots using the system on the CD.

In the Installer's first screen, choose a language and click Continue to see the subsequent screens; click Continue again on the Introduction, Read Me, and License screens.

INTRODUCTION

When you install a new hard drive (a bigger one, of course!) or want to upgrade an older Mac to Mac OS X, you must install Mac OS X. Using the installer is easy, but it takes a bit of time, and you should be sure your documents are backed up onto another disk before you get started.

TIP

Getting a Fresh Start

Software Update (see “Updating Programs with Software Update,” earlier in this part) makes updating your system every time a new version comes out easy. But if you start seeing strange behavior in your system and running Disk Utility doesn't fix it, your best bet is to start fresh with new system software.

Click Agree to agree to the terms of the license agreement.

Choose a hard drive and click Continue.

Click Install.

Type an admin username and password and click OK.
