Network Connection Technologies

As you know, a LAN consists of a group of computers connected together using some sort of electrical medium. Most home and office networks use a technology called Ethernet that was developed by Xerox, Intel, and Digital Equipment Corporation.

If you're using Windows XP Home to construct your own network at home or in a small office environment, you'll use Ethernet in one form or another. The choice you'll have to make is which kind of physical medium to use. I discuss the pro's and con's of the most common alternatives in more detail in Chapter 15, “Creating a Windows XP Home Network.” Here, I'll just give you an overview of the technologies that are available for home use.
