Chapter 9. Using Sherlock for Internet Searches > Using the AppleCare Channel

Using the AppleCare Channel

The AppleCare channel gives you direct access to the Apple site, containing Apple's Knowledge Base. The Apple Knowledge Base is a huge database containing tips, tricks, features, troubleshooting, and answers to questions concerning every Macintosh model that was ever made. This is the same database used by Apple support techs, when they're trying to help you solve a problem, and it's available to you through Sherlock. The AppleCare channel is not just for information. For example, you might want to download the latest software updates for Panther, so you open the AppleCare channel, type Panther updates into the search field, and then click the Search button. AppleCare lists what's available in the way of downloads, and give you the ability (through links) to download the updates.

Use the AppleCare Channel

Open the Applications folder, and then double-click the Sherlock icon.

Click the AppleCare button

Type the words you want to use for the search into the Topic Or Description field.

Click the Search button to display a list of matched topics.

Click on a topic to display more detailed information.

Click the links (if available) in the Info window to obtain more information, or to download patches and upgrades.

Quit Sherlock.
