Chapter 5. Using Mac OS X Applications > Managing Fonts with Font Book

Managing Fonts with Font Book

Most of us have fonts…a whole lot of fonts and Panther adds to it. There are a lot of font management programs floating around, but Panther's Font Book application (), not only meets the needs of the most demanding font aficionado, but also comes packed with great features. For example, you can organize your fonts into specific user-defined folders, and then activate those folders, or specific fonts within the folder without having to restart your application. In addition, Font Book gives you a window to view the font, and change its viewing size on the fly.

Manage Fonts with Font Book

Open the Applications folder, and then double-click the Font Book icon.

Click the File menu, and then click New Collection.

Click the File menu, and then click Add Fonts.

Select the fonts you want to add to the New Collection (active folder), and then select:

  • For Me Only

  • For All Users Of This Computer

  • For Classic Mac OS

Click Open.

Select a collection from the Collection column, and then click on a font to view a sample.

To increase or decrease the view of the font in the window, drag the view slider up or down.

To copy a font, click and drag a font from the Font window into another Collection.

If necessary, type search criteria to locate specific fonts.

To remove a font from a Collection (this does not delete the file from the hard drive), select a font and then press the Delete key.

Quit Font Book.
