Chapter 20. Using Basic Unix Commands > Viewing File Contents

Viewing File Contents

The more command is used to view the contents of files. If the file fits one screen of the display, the more command displays the whole file. Otherwise, more displays one screen of data at a time and then pauses. At the pause, you can press the Return key to advance the data one line at a time, or the Spacebar key to advance the data a full screen.

View File Contents

Open the Applications folder, double-click the Utilities folder, and then double-click the Terminal icon.

Type more filename.doc, and then press Return.

Where filename is, type a file name. In our example, UNIX shows the contents of OSX13_A1.doc.

TIMESAVER You typed in a long UNIX command, and you want to use it again, but you don't want to have to retype the whole line. Press the Up and Down arrow keys to display the last five hundred commands typed at the Terminal prompt.

Click the Close button.
