Chapter 18. Maintaining Your Computer > Recording or Duplicating a Data CD

Recording or Duplicating a Data CD

You can use Disk Utility to quickly create a CD from data on your computer or make a copy of a CD that contains information. Before you can create a CD, you need to create a disk image (.dmg) of the contents. Once you create a disk image, you can make multiple CDs from the same disk image. If you select the Leave Disc Appendable option during the process, you can create a multisession CD; you burn data on a CD-R now, and then add to it later until there is no more room, just like a CD-RW. You can use the CD to transfer files from one computer to another, backup data for safekeeping, or restore the files on a disk.

Create a Disk Image

Open the Applications folder, double-click the Utilities folder, and then double-click the Disk Utility icon.

For duplicate, insert and select the disc you want in the left column.

Click the Images menu, point to New, and then click Image From Disk (for duplicate), or click Image From Folder (for record).

Type a name for the image, and then specify a save location.

Select an image format.

Click Save, and then quit Disk Utility.
