Part 11. Setting Up Programs > Task 1: Working with Program Shortcuts

Task 1: Working with Program Shortcuts

After you've located the program file for which you want to create a shortcut icon, right-click it.

In the menu that opens, choose Send To, and then select Desktop (create shortcut).

Windows adds the shortcut to your desktop. (You might have to minimize any open windows to see it.) To change the name of the shortcut, right-click the shortcut.

In the menu that opens, click Rename.

INTRODUCTION

You can create shortcuts and place them on the desktop to provide quick access to programs. You can then double-click a shortcut to quickly start that program or open that file—without having to open menus and folders. In addition to being able to create shortcuts, you can rename or even delete any shortcut on your desktop.

TIP

Shortcut to File or Printer

In addition to creating shortcuts to programs, you can create them to files or folders or to your printer.

TIP

Search for a File

If you can't find the program file for which you want to create a shortcut icon, try searching for it. Finding a particular file is covered in Part 4, “Working with Files.”

Type a new name for the shortcut, and press Enter.

To delete a shortcut icon, right-click it, and choose Delete from the menu that appears.

In the Confirm File Delete dialog box, click Yes to delete the shortcut.

The shortcut is deleted from your desktop.
