Troubleshooting

The following table describes some of the common problems you may run into with Windows Explorer and some suggested resolutions.

Table 12.3. Common Problems That May Arise in Windows Explorer

System files are not displayed in Windows Explorer.You must select the option to show hidden files and folders within the Folder Options window.
The option to make a folder private is not available.The partition must be formatted with NTFS. Only folders within the My Documents folder can be made private.
File extensions are not displayed in Windows Explorer.You must clear the option to hide extensions for known file types.
Every time you double-click a file with a certain extension it launches the wrong program.You must edit the file association and change the program that is used to open the files.
The Filmstrip view is not available.You must change the folder template to Pictures or Photo Album before the Filmstrip option is available.
File details are not automatically displayed.This is the default behavior. To have the file details displayed, highlight the file and press F3.
Windows is unable to open files with a specific extension.The file association is lost or there is no program installed to open files of that type. Re-create the file association or have Windows locate a program that can open the files.
