Chapter 20. The Heterogeneous Network > IBM Host Connectivity

IBM Host Connectivity

In the past, in order to allow connections to IBM AS/400 and mainframe hosts, you had to buy third-party software or Microsoft's SNA Server product. Microsoft has replaced SNA Server with a new product called Host Integration Server. You cannot install this product on Windows XP, but you can install it on a Windows 200x Server, where it can serve a large number of Windows XP clients. Both 3270 and 5250 IBM terminal client support is provided in this server product. Some of the main features include

  • Single Sign-On— Just what you'd expect from a Windows-based network.

  • Password Synchronization— Similar to the SFN 3.0 product, you can keep passwords on Windows 2000 Active Directory user accounts in sync with the user ID and password on IBM systems.

  • Virtual Private Network (VPN)— You can use the VPN technology that is part of Windows 200x Server.
