Chapter 30. Registry Maintenance and Rep... > Backing Up and Restoring the Registr...

Backing Up and Restoring the Registry

Before diving into Registry modifications, I'll talk about backing them up. Now, I'll admit, I've been working with computers for many years. I know the importance of backing up before starting major work, and I believe I've completed a full backup on one of my personal systems maybe twice in the past 15 years. So what you do with this information is up to you, but trust me—a little up-front time creating a backup saves you a great deal of time reinstalling if something goes awry.

→ If your Registry gets really botched up and you don't happen to have a backup handy, all might not be lost. Read about the Recovery Console in Chapter 32, “Crash Recovery,” for some suggestions on hard-core ways to deal with Registry corruption.
