Chapter 27. Managing Hardware Devices > Understanding Device Drivers

Understanding Device Drivers

In order to solve device driver problems, it is necessary to understand the concepts behind device driver management. This chapter will help you learn what a device driver is, how it functions, and how you can utilize that knowledge to manage device drivers and solve problems relating to them. Let's start by looking at the basic concepts.

An operating system consists of many different components, each of which performs a specific task. The most important component is the kernel. The kernel is a relatively small set of core operating instructions that all system components rely on to perform their larger tasks. If we were to compare a computer operating system to a person, we might say that the kernel of the operating system performs a similar function as the brain of a person. All processing, in one fashion or another, is routed through the kernel and either operated on or passed to another function for additional post processing.
