Chapter 2. Installation Prep > Migrating Files and Settings with the User State...

Migrating Files and Settings with the User State Migration Tool

If the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is like a shiny new Porsche 911 sitting in your driveway, the User State Migration Wizard (USMT) would be a HUMMV. The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is sleek, easy to get along with, and can be used by end-users. The User State Migration Tool is powerful, complex, and intended for administrators and advanced support personnel. The same thing that makes the User State Migration Tool so powerful is what makes it so complicated to most people: its arcane command-line interface that relies on .INF files to control the migration process.

The User State Migration Tool can be found on the Windows XP Professional Setup CD-ROM in the \VALUEACC\MSFT\USMT folder. The User State Migration Tool comes with predefined .INF files that you can use to perform a default migration; however the whole point of the USMT is to have granular control over what gets migrated and how the migration is applied to the target computer, so you may well want to modify the files to suit your needs.
