Chapter 29. Automating Routine Tasks > Introduction to VBScript

Introduction to VBScript

VBScript is based on the Visual Basic programming language, and is nearly identical to Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which is used to create macros (prerecorded instructions) for Microsoft Word, Excel, and many other applications. VBScript is a full-fledged programming language. Even if you've never written a computer program, you can probably pick up enough VBScript to get by, just by reading and toying with working scripts that other people have written.

In this section, I'll give you a very brief overview of VBScript. For a full treatment, you can buy any of several books on the topic (see the end of this chapter for some ideas), you can download detailed references from Microsoft's Web site at msdn.microsoft.com/scripting, or you can scour the Web, where you'll find innumerable sites that discuss and share scripts.
