Troubleshooting

Slow Screen? Maybe You Need More Video Memory

When you play a particularly fast-paced action game, your screen breaks up, skips frames, or displays other video anomalies.

The most likely explanation for lousy video performance is a shortage of RAM on the video card itself. The card's memory holds the frame buffer (the scene you see onscreen) and the Z buffer (which provides depth to the display). At high video resolutions and color depths, you can literally run out of memory to store information, in which case the video display pauses as the adapter tries to catch up with the flow of data.
