What Microsoft Didn't Fix in Windows Me

After more than a decade, you'd think that most of the kinks would have been worked out of Windows, right? Ahem…not exactly. Although Microsoft has done an admirable job of stomping out the most annoying bugs from earlier versions, Windows Me still contains plenty of bugs, glitches, and technical shortcomings. In particular, you're likely to run into problems in the following four areas:

  • System resources— Windows allocates several relatively small pools of memory for use by applications and basic system functions. If an ill-behaved program uses more than its fair share of these resources, you risk crashing, even if you have gobs of unused RAM available. Windows 98 handles system resources far better than Windows 95, and Windows Me has inherited those improvements. Still, if you use Windows Me, you ignore system resources at your own peril.
