Advanced ICS Options

After you've successfully configured the ICS host, Windows places an icon in the notification area (also known as the system tray) just to the right of the taskbar. From here, you can do one of the following:

  • Double-click this icon to see how many computers are sharing your Internet connection (see Figure 20.8).

Figure 20.8. Double-click the ICS tray icon to get an instant status report on the number of computers sharing your connection.

  • Right-click and choose Options from the shortcut menu to display the dialog box shown in Figure 20.9. The options here should be self-explanatory.

  • The most useful option on the shortcut menu is a toggle that turns ICS on or off instantly, without forcing you to reboot. If ICS is active, right-click the taskbar icon and choose Disable Internet Connection Sharing. This option is especially useful if you're downloading a large file or group of files and you can't afford to share bandwidth with someone else trying to download an MP3 or play a streaming video clip.
