Chapter 20. Sharing an Internet Connecti... > Will Internet Connection Sharing Wor...

Will Internet Connection Sharing Work for You?

If you have a home or small business network, the next logical step is to connect the entire network using the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature in Windows Me. The basic concept is simple: Instead of requiring a phone line or cable connection (with accompanying hardware and monthly bill) at each networked computer, you set up a single connection on one PC running Windows Me. Then, using the Home Networking Wizard, you configure that computer as a gateway to the Internet for the rest of the network.

The benefits of Internet Connection Sharing can be profound, in terms of both cost and convenience. Best of all, it requires only a minimal investment in time, effort, and additional hardware to set up. Figure 20.1, taken from the excellent Windows Me Help screens on Home Networking, illustrates how ICS works on a typical network.
