Chapter 10. Managing Fonts > How Windows Uses Fonts

How Windows Uses Fonts

Over the past few years, Windows has developed a reputation as an excellent platform for desktop publishing software. That reputation is well deserved, in large part because of Windows' superb support for scalable fonts that let you preview pages on your video display, exactly as they'll appear on paper. Even if you never publish anything more complicated than a grocery list, though, you'll appreciate Windows' capability to display text using scalable TrueType fonts, both onscreen and on paper. Windows Me includes the standard collection of Windows fonts and enables you to choose from thousands of other scalable fonts, in a variety of formats.

Windows Millennium Edition directly supports fonts in four categories, each of which is rendered differently onscreen and on the printed page.
