Troubleshooting 101

What do you do when Windows starts behaving badly? The range of things that can go wrong with Windows is truly staggering—from sudden lockups, freezing, and crashing, to gobbledygook error messages, to the dreaded Blue Screen of Death—but most of the time the cause is one of the following:

  • A conflict between two hardware devices

  • A conflict between two pieces of software, including Windows system files, third-party system utilities, and device drivers

  • Misconfigured or faulty hardware, especially memory chips and disk drives

  • Corrupt or damaged Windows system files

  • A virus, or a software program whose intended result has an unintended consequence

  • A software bug in Windows or in a device driver
