Chapter 2. Installing and Updating Windo... > Configuring Windows for Automatic Up...

Configuring Windows for Automatic Updates

Windows is a work in progress. The version you install from a CD-ROM represents a snapshot of the product as it existed at the point when that CD was manufactured. Microsoft regularly releases bug fixes, patches, and updates to Windows. To keep Windows running reliably, it's a good practice to regularly update the operating system. But remembering to check for updates, deciding whether they're necessary for your system, and then downloading and installing them is a burden that the average computer user shouldn't have to bear.

One of the most important evolutionary improvements in Windows Millennium Edition is its capability to automatically handle most of the work of downloading and installing updates. To be absolutely certain you install crucial Windows updates as soon as they're available, use Windows Me's Automatic Updates feature. To set things up, open Control Panel and double-click the Automatic Updates icon. As Figure 2.7 illustrates, you can specify how much control you want over the process.
