Chapter 4. Getting Help > When Should You Pay for Support?

When Should You Pay for Support?

Microsoft offers a variety of telephone support options to help you deal with Windows problems. The options available to you depend on how you purchased your copy of Windows Millennium Edition:

  • If you purchased the retail version of Windows Me, you are eligible for two no-charge "Personal Support incidents." Before you leap for the phone, be sure you understand the full details: You must call during regular business hours. You pay for the long-distance call, even if it involves a long wait on hold. And there's no guarantee that your problem will be solved.

  • If your copy of Windows Me was preinstalled on a new computer you purchased, you must contact the manufacturer directly for free support. Microsoft will not provide assisted support over the phone or the Web in this case.
